Lessons Learned from Project PEARL
From September 2022 to February 2024, Christie’s Place conducted a total of 6 Project Pearl cohorts with 49 people living with HIV. Evaluation of the project showed 88% overall satisfaction of the training, 100% said yes to the question “Has this program helped you envision yourself as a leader?”, and 97% said yes to the question “Has this program helped you become more able to speak up?”. Additional data showed upon completion of the training nearly 100% of participants increased their knowledge with topics discussed during every learning module, 86% showed an increase in confidence in practicing advocacy skills presented in the specific modules, and 100% of participants marked that they are ready to advocate for the health and social care of people living with HIV.
Out of the 49 Project Pearl graduates, 13 (25%) have applied for or are currently part of the San Diego HIV Planning Group. Four of the 13 graduates (31%) hold HPG leadership positions. The County of San Diego is currently procuring for a new round of leadership training and development program. The implementation of this new program is expected to start by March 2025 and will be expanded to all the five geographical regions of San Diego.
